While the rate was still the highest among all racial and ethnic groups, it represents huge progress since the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Affordable_Care_Act\">Affordable Care Act<\/a> (ACA) became law more than a decade ago.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nIn between 2010 and 2018, in fact, the percentage of American Indians and Alaska Natives who went without health coverage decreased by an impressive 16 points,   <a href=\"https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/22\/hhsjuly2021.pdf\">HHS said in the report<\/a> on Thursday. The Biden administration is citing the figures as it seeks to improve insurance rates even more in the coming years.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\n\u201cCMS is committed to working with our tribal partners to ensure American Indians and Alaska Natives have access to the coverage they need,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/about\/news\/2021\/05\/27\/statement-on-the-swearing-in-of-chiquita-brooks-lasure-as-administrator-of-the-cms.html\">Administrator Chiquita Brooks-LaSur<\/a> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cms.gov\/\">Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services<\/a> told Indianz.Com.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cAlthough American Indians and Alaska Natives can enroll year round, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthcare.gov\/american-indians-alaska-natives\/coverage\/\">HealthCare.gov Special Enrollment Period<\/a> provides the opportunity to get coverage more quickly and we invite people who need coverage to sign up by August 15,\u201d Brooks-LaSur said in encouraging people in tribal communities to explore their health insurance options.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">If you\u2019re a provider in Indian Country and are not sure who to connect with about your <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/COVID19?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#COVID19<\/a> vaccine allotment or distribution, visit <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/75KhKjXtQf\">https:\/\/t.co\/75KhKjXtQf<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/CMSNativeHealth?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#CMSNativeHealth<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/y3tj1XScVl\">pic.twitter.com\/y3tj1XScVl<\/a><\/p>&mdash; CMSGov (@CMSGov) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CMSGov\/status\/1392138311460917248?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 11, 2021<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nDespite the gains, the report shows how Indian Country still has a long way to go. As of 2019, for example, health coverage among American Indians and Alaska Natives lagged significantly behind non-Hispanic Whites, Asians, African-Americans  and Native Hawaiians, according to the data.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nThen in 2020, the coronavirus took a major toll on tribes and their citizens. American Indians and Alaska Natives have suffered the highest infection, hospitalization  and death rates throughout the <a href=\/covid19\/>COVID-19 pandemic<\/a>, according to the report.\r\n<p><p>\r\nThe situation has improved in 2021, due to  high COVID-19 vaccination rates among Native people. As of July 9, more than 55 percent of adult patients within the <a href=https:\/\/www.ihs.gov\/>Indian Health Service<\/a> have received at least one dose of the vaccine, which was <a  href=https:\/\/covid.cdc.gov\/covid-data-tracker\/#vaccination-demographics-trends>highest among all racial and ethnic groups<\/a>, the HHS report noted.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nAnd according to IHS data from July 15, which is the latest available, more than 1.47 million COVID-19 vaccine doses have been administered throughout the system. On the <a href=https:\/\/www.navajo-nsn.gov\/>Navajo Nation<\/a>, which suffered some of the worst impacts of the coronavirus,    90 percent of elders over the age of 75 and 64 percent of residents over the age of 12 have been fully vaccinated. \r\n<p><\/p>\r\nThe same can&#8217;t always be said of outside communities. \r\n<P><\/P>\r\n\u201cIt&#8217;s just like going out to a battle in a war,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NNPrezNez\">Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez<\/a> said during a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indianz.com\/covid19\/2021\/07\/20\/navajo-nation-town-hall-arizona-new-mexico-utah-96\/\">COVID-19 town hall<\/a> on Wednesday. \u201cYou equip yourself. You put your armor on, you put your face mask on and  you get your vaccination.\u201d\r\n<P><\/P>\r\n\u201cPeople see Navajo people off the Navajo Nation and they know that we&#8217;re Navajo,\u201d\r\nNez said from a reservation  that spans the states of Arizona, New Mexico and Utah.  \u201cYou know why? Because we&#8217;re wearing masks.\u201d\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<div class=\"mt-1 mb-1\"><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-8411603009680747\" data-ad-slot=\"6394965691\"><\/ins><script>(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});<\/script><\/div>\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nThe <a href=https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/2021\/06\/21\/i-wanted-to-cry-tribes-welcome-ruling-in-long-running-health-care-dispute\/>Affordable Care Act became law<\/a> in 2010, ushering in a new era of health options for tribes and their citizens. The law included a permanent reauthorization of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ihs.gov\/ihcia\/\">Indian Health Care Improvement Act<\/a> and enabled states to extend  services to more American Indians and Alaska Natives through an expansion of the  <a href=https:\/\/www.medicaid.gov\/>Medicaid program<\/a>, which is administered by CMS.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nAccording to the HHS report, the increase in the number of Native people with health coverage can be attributed to the expansion of Medicare in dozens of states.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cOne analysis shows that a year after the ACA Medicaid expansion went into effect, the national uninsured rate among AI\/ANs dropped nationally from 24.8 percent in 2013 to 20.6 percent in 2014, and the largest gains in coverage occurred among those living on or near reservations in states that expanded Medicaid,\u201d the report reads.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nBut <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/medicaid\/issue-brief\/status-of-state-medicaid-expansion-decisions-interactive-map\/\">not  everyone has  gotten<\/a> on board. Oklahoma, for example, didn&#8217;t adopt an expansion of Medicaid until July 1. According to the report,  Medicaid dollars now account for the overwhelmingly majority of third-party reimbursements  in the system.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\n\u201cMedicaid collections at IHS-operated facilities grew from $496 million in FY 2013 to $729 million in FY 2018,\u201d the report states. \r\n<P><\/P>\r\n\u201cThe proportion of patients with insurance at federally operated IHS facilities grew from 64 percent to 78 percent from fiscal years 2013 through 2018, and IHS facilities in states that expanded Medicaid saw the largest increases,\u201d it continues.\r\n<P><\/p>\r\nThe growth  is significant, as  federally operated IHS facilities collected $1.1 billion in third-party reimbursements in fiscal year 2019.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n \u201cMedicaid expansion increased the number of AI\/ANs who have both access to both IHS services and Medicaid coverage, which allows IHS and Tribal health agencies to bring in additional needed revenue to provide care,\u201d the HHS report states.\r\n
