Photo by <A href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Kevin_Abourezk\">Kevin Abourezk<\/A> <A href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Kevin_Abourezk\"><I aria-hidden=true class=\"fab fa-twitter\"><\/I><\/A><\/figcaption>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nHe said many Rosebud Lakota members of the community were gone to attend sundance ceremonies on the reservations, but he assured those in the caravan that their people were praying for their safe travels.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cIt\u2019s an honor to facilitate this and welcome you to the gateway to the Oceti Sakowin,\u201d he said.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nThe caravan of people and vehicles began their journey at the start of this week, landing in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, where they attended a ceremony on Wednesday at the site of the former <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Carlisle_Indian_Industrial_School\">Carlisle Indian Industrial School<\/a> in which the U.S. Army returned the remains of the nine Rosebud children to the caravan to be returned to their homelands in South Dakota.\r\n<p><\/p><div class=\"mt-1 mb-1\"><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-8411603009680747\" data-ad-slot=\"6394965691\"><\/ins><script>(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});<\/script><\/div><P><\/P>\r\nThe endeavor\u2019s origins began six years ago when members of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Rosebud-Sioux-Tribe-Repatriation-Info-110064154670509\/\">Sicangu Youth Council<\/a> visited Carlisle \u2013 the most infamous institution of the Indian boarding school era \u2013 and became incensed by lack of care shown to the children whose headstones displayed familiar names and some of whose graves had been built over by a road.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nSome of the Rosebud youth even got out of their van and put candy on the road as a show of respect to their ancestors. Later, many of the youth determined themselves to fight to get their tribe\u2019s ancestral remains returned to their homelands.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nLater, they learned the names of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federalregister.gov\/documents\/2021\/04\/02\/2021-06784\/notice-of-intended-disinterment\">nine Rosebud children buried at Carlisle<\/a>: Lucy Take the Tail (Pretty Eagle), Rose Long Face (Little Hawk), Ernest Knocks Off (White Thunder), Dennis Strikes First (Blue Tomahawk), Maud Little Girl (Swift Bear), Friend Hollow Horn Bear, Warren Painter (Bear Paints Dirt), Alvan (Kills Seven Horses) and Dora Her Pipe (Brave Bull).\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<div class=\"fb-video\" data-allowfullscreen=\"true\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/indianzcom\/videos\/3034897116755370\" style=\"background-color: #fff; display: inline-block;\"><\/div>\r\n<figcaption class=\"figure-caption\">Indianz.Com Video by Kevin Abourezk: <a href=https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/indianzcom\/videos\/3034897116755370>Welcoming home the children in Sioux City, Iowa<\/a>\r\n<\/figcaption>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nSix years later, the Rosebud youth stepped out of their vans to be welcomed by a contingent of Dakota, Lakota, Winnebago and First Nations people in Sioux City.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nChristopher Eagle Bear, a member of the Sicangu Youth Council, thanked those gathered Friday morning for their hospitality and generosity, and for the tipi they erected.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cWe see a tipi. We see fire. Just like this fire, the fire is burning in all of us to do something better for the next generations to come.\u201d\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nAsia Black Bull, 21, said the Sicangu Youth Council\u2019s success at gaining the return of their ancestors\u2019 remains represented a triumph for all of Indian Country.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cAs indigenous people, we\u2019ve all been standing up,\u201d she said. \u201cWe\u2019ve all been rising. We\u2019re a failed system of what the U.S. tried to do, to annihilate us. We do.\u201d\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nLater Friday morning, nearly 300 people attended a departure ceremony held at the Tyson Event Center in Sioux City. He compared the Sicangu Youth Council\u2019s efforts to those of the Native youth who started the efforts to stop the Dakota Access Pipeline at Standing Rock.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cIt\u2019s a constant lesson in how we can elevate their voice,\u201d he said.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nAnd he lamented the treatment of Native children \u2013 including his own father and other relatives \u2013 at the hands of priests and nuns in boarding schools. He said he struggled in the Catholic school he attended as a child. And he said he could relate  to the story of one of the nine Rosebud children \u2013 Ernest Knocks Off (White Thunder).\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cI could relate to him what they wrote about him.
