Patent and Trademark Office issues a patent to Din\u00e9 College<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"date\">Tuesday, July 13, 2021<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"source\">Source: Din\u00e9 College<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"source-links\"><a href=https:\/\/www.dinecollege.edu\/>dinecollege.edu<\/a><\/div>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<em>The following is the text of a July 12, 2021, from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dinecollege.edu\/\">Din\u00e9 College<\/a>.<\/em>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nTSAILE, Arizona &#8212; A Din\u00e9 College professor has received a <a href=\"https:\/\/uspto.report\/company\/Dine-College\">patent from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office<\/a> that would make it easier for doctors to diagnose disorders in the brain, heart, intestines, or uterus.\u00a0\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nThe patent, &#8220;Concentric ring electrodes for improved accuracy of Laplacian estimation,\u201d was issued on June 29, 2021. \u201cThe patent can be used for various kinds of electrophysiological measurement, such as recording electric signals from brain, heart, muscles, intestines, uterus, etc., for diagnostic purposes,\u201d said Associate Professor Oleksandr Makeyev, who has taught math at the College since 2014.\u00a0\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cWhile I&#8217;ve worked on the concentric ring electrode technology for over a decade now, the research that went into this particular patent was the culmination of several different projects, grants, publications, etc.\u201d said Dr. Oleksandr Makeyev. The results were obtained about a year ago in the middle of the pandemic and then submitted as a patent application on October 9, 2020.\u00a0\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cThis could be a first-ever patent for a tribal college,\u201d said Din\u00e9 College President Charles \u201cMonty\u201d Roessel. \u201cThe approval of this scientific patent shows our growth and entrance into academic entrepreneurship field as an institution of higher education and exhibits the highly qualified and esteemed faculty we have educating our students.\u201d\u00a0\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<div class=\"embed-responsive embed-responsive-16by9\">\r\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lQp3gD5J6EQ?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<figcaption class=\"figure-caption\"><a href=https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=lQp3gD5J6EQ>About Din\u00e9 College<\/a>\r\n<\/figcaption>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nDr. Makeyev has a second patent application pending, as well as a third one in the preparation stages. \u201cI believe that this pursuit of intellectual property and technology transfer on part of Din\u00e9 College reflects the institution&#8217;s high regard for cutting edge research and innovation,\u201d Dr. Makeyev said. \r\n<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cWe are very grateful for the support of the National Science Foundation (NSF) Tribal Colleges and Universities Program (TCUP) since costs and fees associated with this pursuit were covered under two research grants. We are also very grateful to Kilpatrick Townsend &#038; Stockton LLP for their help and legal support that was absolutely vital to the success of this effort,\u201d he added.\u00a0\r\n\u00a0<p><\/p>\r\nJames Tutt, Dean of the School of STEM said Din\u00e9 College recently broke ground for a $7.4 million STEM building which will create more opportunities for students and faculty to conduct research. \u201cDin\u00e9 College\u2019s School of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) is paving a way for the future,\u201d said Dean Tutt.\r\n\u00a0<p><\/p>\r\n<div class=\"mt-1 mb-1\"><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-8411603009680747\" data-ad-slot=\"6394965691\"><\/ins><script>(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});<\/script><\/div><p><\/p>\r\nDr. Makeyev has a Ph.D. in engineering science from Clarkson University. In 2014, after completing a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Rhode Island, he joined Din\u00e9 College. He has authored and co-authored 77 scientific publications including 34 papers in peer-reviewed journals. In 2017, he was elevated to the rank of a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the world&#8217;s largest technical professional organization.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nDin\u00e9 College is a four-year tribal college located on the Navajo reservation with six campuses and two microsites across Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah and primarily serves Navajo students. The school offers 13 bachelor\u2019s degrees, 20 associate\u2019s, and 9 certificate programs. The school is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.
