With nearly 1,000 bodies in mass graves discovered this month on the grounds of Canadian boarding schools amid their ongoing investigation, and Secretary of the Interior Deb Halaand\u2019s recent pledge to investigate past abuses in the U.S., Arizona\u2019s Indigenous boarding schools will face fresh scrutiny.<p><\/p>\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/2021\/07\/08\/cronkite-news-indian-boarding-school-era-under-investigation\/boardingschoolarizona\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-13764\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"810\" data-attachment-id=\"13764\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/2021\/07\/08\/cronkite-news-indian-boarding-school-era-under-investigation\/boardingschoolarizona\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/08\/boardingschoolarizona.jpeg\" data-orig-size=\"1024,810\" data-comments-opened=\"0\" data-image-title=\"Havasupai Indian School\" data-image-description=\"\" data-image-caption=\"&lt;p&gt;Children at Havasupai Indian School in Cataract Canyon, Arizona, in 1901. Photo courtesy of the Library of Congress <\/figcaption>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nRosalie Talahongva, who curates the <a href=\"https:\/\/phxindcenter.org\/phoenix-indian-school-visitor-center\/\">Phoenix Indian School Visitor Center<\/a>, said she and many of her Hopi relatives went to school there.<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cIf you ask, was that voluntary, I would ask you, is it voluntary when there isn\u2019t any other option?\u201d Talahongva said.<p><\/p>\r\nThe Phoenix Indian School closed in 1990 by order of the federal government. But a handful of Indian boarding schools remain in operation.<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cLieutenant Richard Henry Pratt had a lot to do with the structure of these boarding schools,\u201d Talahongva said, referring to the founder of the influential Carlisle Indian School in Pennsylvania. \u201cHis idea was \u2018Kill the Indian, save the man.\u2019 So the whole destruction, annihilation of Indian identity \u2013 Indian culture was to be destroyed at these federal boarding schools.<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cThere were many children that were just forcibly taken away from their families and made to come to boarding school.\u201d<p><\/p>\r\n<div class=\"embed-responsive embed-responsive-16by9\">\r\n    <iframe   src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/MUdnCOfoXOI\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\r\n    <\/div>\r\n    <figcaption class=figure-caption>Indianz.Com Video: <a href=https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/2021\/06\/22\/secretary-deb-haaland-federal-indian-boarding-school-truth-initiative\/>Secretary Deb Haaland at National Congress of American Indians<\/a>\r\n    <\/figcaption>\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nBy 1900, 20,000 children were in Indian boarding schools. By 1925, that number had more than tripled, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/boardingschoolhealing.org\/education\/us-indian-boarding-school-history\/\">Boarding School Healing<\/a>.<p><\/p>\r\nStudents were stripped of everything related to Native life. Their hair was cut short, they had to wear uniforms, and students were punished physically for speaking anything but English. Contact with family was discouraged or prohibited. Survivors have described a culture of pervasive physical and sexual abuse at the schools. Food and medical attention often were scarce and led to many deaths, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/education\/archive\/2019\/03\/traumatic-legacy-indian-boarding-schools\/584293\/\">The Atlantic<\/a>.<p><\/p>\r\nSome of the schools were operated by the Catholic Church. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/education\/archive\/2019\/03\/traumatic-legacy-indian-boarding-schools\/584293\/\">The Atlantic reports<\/a> \u201cabout one-third of the 357 known Indian boarding schools were managed by various Christian denominations\u201d under the 1819 Civilization Fund Act.<p><\/p>\r\nThe Catholic Diocese of Phoenix did not respond to requests for comment.<p><\/p>\r\nThe operation of the long-shuttered schools will face new inquiry under the <a href=\"https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/2021\/06\/22\/secretary-deb-haaland-federal-indian-boarding-school-truth-initiative\/\">Federal Indian Boarding School Initiative<\/a> announced on June 22 by Haaland. The department intends to identify boarding school facilities and burial sites across the country and review enrollment lists.<p><\/p>\r\n<div class=row><div class=col-10>\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-pdfemb-pdf-embedder-viewer\"><a href=\"https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/22\/doi062221.pdf\" class=\"pdfemb-viewer\" style=\"\" data-width=\"max\" data-height=\"max\" data-toolbar=\"both\" data-toolbar-fixed=\"on\">doi062221<\/a><\/div>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nThe announcement came after the discovery of the remains of 215 children on the grounds of Kamloops Indian Residential School in Canada. More graves have already been found in Canada. The Cowessess First Nation found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2021\/06\/23\/canada-cowessess-residential-school-graves\/\">751 unmarked graves<\/a> at the site of the former Marieval Indian Residential School, the Washington Post reported Thursday. The Sioux Valley Dakota Nation is working to identify a series of unmarked graves at the former Brandon Residential School in Manitoba, according to <a class=\"fancybox-youtube\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5FlrT-upFo8&amp;t=3s\">Chief Jennifer Bone<\/a>. So far, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insideedition.com\/manitobas-indigenous-community-working-to-identify-104-bodies-of-children-buried-at-residential\">104 possible bodies<\/a> of Indigenous children have been discovered on or around the school\u2019s property.<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cIt will be hard to look back on that past, but it\u2019s time that it was acknowledged,\u201d Talahongva said. \u201cThe atrocities that happened here need to be acknowledged.\u201d<p><\/p>\r\nAccording to the <a href=\"https:\/\/heard.org\/exhibits\/boardingschool\/\">Heard Museum<\/a> in Phoenix, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.doi.gov\/ocl\/indian-boarding-schools\">four<\/a> off-reservation Bureau of Indian Affairs boarding schools are still in use: Chemawa Indian School in Salem, Oregon, Sherman Indian School in Riverside, California, Flandreau Indian School in Flandreau, South Dakota, and Riverside Indian School in Anadarko, Oklahoma. However, the National Native American Boarding School Healing Coalition told Reuters more than 70 schools still operate in the U.S.<p><\/p>\r\n<div class=\"mt-1 mb-1\"><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-8411603009680747\" data-ad-slot=\"6394965691\"><\/ins><script>(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});<\/script><\/div><p><\/p>\r\nHaaland, a member of the Pueblo of Laguna in New Mexico, <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/energy-environment\/558001-haaland-calls-on-us-to-address-legacy-of-native-american-boarding\">calls herself<\/a> a product of \u201chorrific assimilationist policies\u201d in the U.S.<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cI come from ancestors who endured the horrors of Indian boarding school assimilation policies carried out by the same department that I now lead; the same agency that tried to eradicate our culture, our language, our spiritual practices, and our people,\u201d she said   in <a href=\"https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/2021\/06\/22\/our-communities-are-still-mourning-secretary-haaland-announces-federal-indian-boarding-school-initiative\/\">remarks to the National Congress of American Indians<\/a>.<p><\/p>\r\nMarsha Small, a Montana State University doctoral student, has been using ground-penetrating radar to locate unmarked graves at the Chemawa Indian School cemetery in Salem, Oregon. So far, she has found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/native-americans-decry-unmarked-graves-untold-history-boarding-schools-2021-06-22\/\">222 sets<\/a> of remains at the school, which remains in operation.<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cUntil we can find those kids and let their elders come get them or know where they can pay respects, I don\u2019t think the Native is going to heal, and as such I don\u2019t think America is going to heal,\u201d Small told Reuters.<p><\/p>\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/2021\/07\/08\/cronkite-news-indian-boarding-school-era-under-investigation\/boardingschooloklahoma\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-13763\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"828\" data-attachment-id=\"13763\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/2021\/07\/08\/cronkite-news-indian-boarding-school-era-under-investigation\/boardingschooloklahoma\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/08\/boardingschooloklahoma.jpg\" data-orig-size=\"1024,828\" data-comments-opened=\"0\" data-image-title=\"Cantonment Indian Boarding School\" data-image-description=\"\" data-image-caption=\"&lt;p&gt;Uniformed boys and girls pose with their teacher in front of an Indian boarding school in Cantonment, Oklahoma, in 1909.
