Kyrsten Sinema, D-Arizona, repeated her refusal to end the filibuster Tuesday, the same day that Republicans used the maneuver to block debate on sweeping voting rights legislation that has already passed the House.<p><\/p>\r\nHer announcement reignited anger among Democratic Party progressives, who protested Tuesday outside Sinema&#8217;s Phoenix office where they demanded that she &#8220;stand up for the people of Arizona.&#8221;<p><\/p>\r\nPhoenix Police arrested 10 people for trespassing during that protest, which came just hours before the Senate voted to block debate on the For the People Act. But all <a href=\"https:\/\/www.senate.gov\/legislative\/LIS\/roll_call_lists\/roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?congress=117&amp;session=1&amp;vote=00246\">50 Republicans<\/a> voted to continue debating the bill &#8211; or filibuster it &#8211; and it takes 60 votes to end a filibuster and move to a vote on any legislation in the Senate.<p><\/p>\r\nWith Vice President Kamala Harris in the president&#8217;s chair as the tie-breaking vote, Democrats could have given final approval to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/117\/bills\/s2093\/BILLS-117s2093pcs.pdf\">the bill<\/a> &#8211; but for the filibuster.<p><\/p>\r\nIn a Washington Post editorial Tuesday, Sinema claimed that ending the filibuster would hurt democracy in the long run, by allowing laws to whipsaw back and forth as different parties gained simple majorities in the Senate.<p><\/p>\r\n&#8220;Arizonans expect me to do what I promised when I ran for the House and the Senate: to be independent &#8211; like Arizona &#8211; and to work with anyone to achieve lasting results,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2021\/06\/21\/kyrsten-sinema-filibuster-for-the-people-act\/\">Sinema wrote.<\/a><p><\/p>\r\n <a href=\"https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/2021\/06\/23\/cronkite-news-republicans-block-passage-of-voting-rights-bill\/robocall-rising\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-13289\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1333\" data-attachment-id=\"13289\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/2021\/06\/23\/cronkite-news-republicans-block-passage-of-voting-rights-bill\/robocall-rising\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/23\/kyrstensinema.jpg\" data-orig-size=\"2000,1333\" data-comments-opened=\"0\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;4&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;Keerthi Vedantam&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;Canon EOS 80D&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;Sen. Photo by Keerthi Vedantam \/ Cronkite News<\/figcaption>\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nIt&#8217;s not the first time Sinema has been at odds with her party: She caught heat with a &#8220;thumbs-down vote&#8221; in March on a proposed $15-an-hour minimum wage, and later when she missed a vote in May that would have created an independent commission to investigate the Jan. 6 insurrection.<p><\/p>\r\nPolitical analysts say it&#8217;s too early to tell the long-term effect Sinema&#8217;s actions will have on her chances of reelection, but that she &#8220;is walking a fine line in her home state&#8221; that has a &#8220;long Republican lineage.&#8221;<p><\/p>\r\nBut they were not surprised by her actions, which they said is part of Sinema&#8217;s political strategy.<p><\/p>\r\n&#8220;Her party is applying continuous pressure to end the filibuster, and Sinema is burnishing her centrist bona fides among moderates,&#8221; said Mike Noble, chief of research for OH Predictive Insights.<p><\/p>\r\nNoble said his organization polled registered Arizona voters after the minimum-wage vote and found Democrats were dissatisfied with Sinema, but the <a href=\"https:\/\/ohpredictive.com\/press-releases\/sinemas-independence-costs-democratic-support\/\">dip in party support<\/a> was only temporary. Within two months, her numbers had already rebounded, he said.<p><\/p>\r\n&#8220;There was a penalty at first, and if that would&#8217;ve stayed longer term it could&#8217;ve given her some real electoral challenges, but she&#8217;s not up for reelection for a while so her controversial vote makes her stand out,&#8221; Noble said.<p><\/p>\r\n<div class=\" content_cards_card content_cards_domain_twitter-com\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"content_cards_image\">\n\t\t\t\t<a class=\"content_cards_image_link\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Progress_AZ\/status\/1407467241478639617\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/wp-content\/plugins\/content-cards\/skins\/default\/content-cards-placeholder.png\" alt=\"\">\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\n\t<div class=\"content_cards_title\">\n\t\t<a class=\"content_cards_title_link\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Progress_AZ\/status\/1407467241478639617\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/div>\n\t<div class=\"content_cards_description\">\n\t\t<a class=\"content_cards_description_link\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Progress_AZ\/status\/1407467241478639617\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/div>\n\t<div class=\"content_cards_site_name\">\n\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/abs.twimg.com\/favicons\/twitter.3.ico\" alt=\"X (formerly Twitter)\" class=\"content_cards_favicon\"\/>\t\tX (formerly Twitter)\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nKyle Kondik, managing editor of Sabato&#8217;s Crystal Ball at the University of Virginia&#8217;s Center for Politics, said the fact that Sinema is &#8220;not as liberal as the rest of the Democratic caucus&#8221; may help her in the future.
