Photo: <a href=https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/smcdevitt\/3827598071\/> SMcD22<\/a><\/figcaption>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nInfrastructure needs in Native communities extend to schools, hospitals, clinics, roads and bridges, most of which are decades old. The cost to <a href=\"https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/2021\/06\/17\/examining-federal-facilities-in-indian-country\/\">fix, maintain and replace aging facilities in Indian Country<\/a> runs in the billions of dollars.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nAt the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bie.edu\">Bureau of Indian  Education<\/a>, for example, more than 70 schools are in need of replacement. It will cost $4.5 billion to fix them all at current, the <a href=https:\/\/naturalresources.house.gov\/subcommittees\/subcommittee-for-indigenous-peoples-of-the-united-states>House Subcommittee for Indigenous Peoples of the United States<\/a> was told last week.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nThe <a href=https:\/\/www.bia.gov\/>Bureau of Indian Affairs<\/a> has its own maintenance backlog.  At   the <a href=https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/indianz\/sets\/examining-federal-facilities-in-indian-country>hearing on June 17<\/a>, a senior official said the price tag for   detention centers, irrigation projects and other facilities     comes to $1.7 billion.\r\n<p><\/p><div class=\"mt-1 mb-1\"><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-8411603009680747\" data-ad-slot=\"6394965691\"><\/ins><script>(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});<\/script><\/div><p><\/p>\r\nThe <a href=https:\/\/www.ihs.gov\/>Indian Health Service<\/a> estimates it will cost  at least $14 billion to replace aging structures. The three largest health centers  in the nation &#8212; the Alaska Native Medical Center in Anchorage Alaska; the Gallup Indian Medical Center in Gallup, New Mexico; and the Phoenix Indian Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona &#8212; are among the facilities in need of replacement.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nThe <a href=https:\/\/www.indian.senate.gov\/hearing\/roundtable-discussion-concrete-solutions-building-successful-foundation-native-communities> infrastructure roundtable<\/a> takes  place at 2:30pm Eastern on Wednesday.
