Photo: <a href=https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/sbeebe\/9466228475\/>Sam Beebe<\/a><\/figcaption>\r\n<div class=\"h3-responsive font-weight-bold\">House committee sets hearing on Tribal Coastal Resiliency Act<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"date\">Monday, June 21, 2021<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"source\">Indianz.Com<\/div>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nThe <a href=\"https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/2019\/09\/25\/tribal-coastal-resiliency-act-inches-for.asp\">Tribal Coastal Resiliency Act<\/a> is up for its first hearing in the 117th Congress.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<a href=https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/117th-congress\/house-bill\/1415\/all-actions>H.R.1415<\/a> helps tribes address the effects of climate change in coastal areas. The measure has always enjoyed bipartisan support but has yet to make it over the finish line on Capitol Hill.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cThis bill will make available to tribes grant funding for the protection and preservation of tribal coastal zones and areas,\u201d   <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PresFawnSharp\">President Fawn Sharp<\/a> of the <a href=https:\/\/www.ncai.org\/>National Congress of American Indians<\/a> said when a prior version of H.R.1415 passed the <a href=https:\/\/www.house.gov\/>U.S. House of Representatives<\/a>.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n \u201cThis funding will be very helpful to every tribe that is dealing with rising sea level, and coastal and shoreline degradation and destabilization due to climate change,\u201d said Sharp,  who also serves as vice president of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.quinaultindiannation.com\">Quinault Nation<\/a>.\r\n<p><\/p><div class=\"mt-1 mb-1\"><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-8411603009680747\" data-ad-slot=\"6394965691\"><\/ins><script>(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});<\/script><\/div><p><\/p>\r\nSpecifically, the bill makes tribes eligible for grants under the <a href=https:\/\/coast.noaa.gov\/czm\/act\/>Coastal Zone Management Act<\/a>. Currently,  only \u201ccoastal  states\u201d are able to access such <a href=https:\/\/coast.noaa.gov\/funding\/>funding through the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration<\/a> (NOAA), which is part of the <a href=https:\/\/www.commerce.gov\/>Department of Commerce<\/a>.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nThe <a href=https:\/\/naturalresources.house.gov>House Committee on Natural Resources<\/a> will take testimony on the H.R.1415 at a hearing  at 3pm Eastern on Tuesday afternoon. A witness list has not yet been posted line.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nA total of 13 bills are on the <a href=https:\/\/naturalresources.house.gov\/hearings\/remote-fc-legislative-hearing-notice_june-22-2021>agenda for the legislative hearing<\/a>.
