Photo by Indianz.Com <a href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by-nc-sa\/4.0\/\">(CC BY-NC-SA 4.0)<\/a><\/figcaption>\r\n<div class=\"h3-responsive font-weight-bold\">Senate committee schedules confirmation hearing for Interior nominee<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"date\">Thursday, March 27, 2025<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"source\">Indianz.Com<\/div>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nThe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.senate.gov\/\">Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources<\/a> has scheduled an April 2 confirmation hearing for <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Katharine_MacGregor\">Katharine MacGregor<\/a> to serve as  Deputy Secretary of the Interior.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nThe <a href=https:\/\/www.energy.senate.gov\/hearings\/2025\/4\/hearing-to-consider-the-nominations-of-ms-katharine-macgregor-to-be-deputy-secretary-of-the-interior-and-mr-james-danly-to-be-deputy-secretary-of-energy>upcoming hearing<\/a> comes more than two months after President Donald Trump nominated MacGregor for the political post. If confirmed by the <a href=https:\/\/www.senate.gov\/>U.S. Senate<\/a>, she would be the second-in-command at the <a href=https:\/\/www.doi.gov\/>Department of the Interior<\/a>, the federal agency with the most trust and treaty responsibilities in Indian Country.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\n&#8220;Katharine is currently Vice President of Environmental Services at NextEra Energy, Inc., and previously worked at the Department of the Interior during my first four years as President,&#8221; Trump said on <a href=https:\/\/indianz.com\/NativeVote\/2025\/01\/11\/donald-trump-announces-katharine-macgregor-as-deputy-secretary-of-the-interior\/>January 11<\/a>. &#8220;She helped us in our quest to make our Nation Energy DOMINANT, and was also an integral part of the team that produced our Historic \u201cSalute to America\u201d at the National Mall.&#8221;\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nCurrently, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SecretaryBurgum\">Secretary Doug Burgum<\/a> is the only Senate-confirmed nominee at Interior. He won  <a href=https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/nomination\/119th-congress\/11\/3?s=1&#038;r=21>bipartisan approval on January 30<\/a> but the Republican-controlled chamber has not   considered any   of his fellow departmental nominees in the nearly two months since then.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\n<div class=\" content_cards_card content_cards_domain_indianz-com\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"content_cards_image\">\n\t\t\t\t<a class=\"content_cards_image_link\" href=\"https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/2025\/02\/04\/citizen-of-navajo-nation-tapped-for-indian-affairs-post\/\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/08\/jgarrettrenvillebillykirkland-9.jpg\" alt=\"Citizen of Navajo Nation tapped for Indian Affairs post\">\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\n\t<div class=\"content_cards_title\">\n\t\t<a class=\"content_cards_title_link\" href=\"https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/2025\/02\/04\/citizen-of-navajo-nation-tapped-for-indian-affairs-post\/\">\n\t\t\tCitizen of Navajo Nation tapped for Indian Affairs post\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/div>\n\t<div class=\"content_cards_description\">\n\t\t<a class=\"content_cards_description_link\" href=\"https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/2025\/02\/04\/citizen-of-navajo-nation-tapped-for-indian-affairs-post\/\">\n\t\t\t<p>A citizen of the Navajo Nation is being tapped to serve as Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs though it\u2019s not the person who was publicly lobbying for the job.<\/p>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/div>\n\t<div class=\"content_cards_site_name\">\n\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.indianz.com\/favicon.ico\" alt=\"Indianz.Com\" class=\"content_cards_favicon\"\/>\t\tIndianz.Com\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nThe   pending Interior nominees include:\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li> <a href=https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/nomination\/119th-congress\/22\/14>William &#8220;Billy&#8221; Kirkland<\/a>, who was <a href=https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/2025\/02\/04\/citizen-of-navajo-nation-tapped-for-indian-affairs-post\/>nominated to be Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs<\/a> on February 3.<\/li>\r\n<li> <a href=https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/nomination\/119th-congress\/22\/2>Leslie Beyer<\/a>, who was nominated to be Assistant Secretary for Land and Minerals Management on February 3.<\/li>\r\n<li> <a href=https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/nomination\/119th-congress\/22\/4>William L. Doffermyre<\/a>, who was nominated to be <a href=https:\/\/www.doi.gov\/solicitor>Solicitor<\/a>, the highest-ranking legal official at the department, on February 3.<\/li>\r\n<li>   <a href=https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/nomination\/119th-congress\/22\/27>Andrea Travnicek<\/a>, who was nominated to be Assistant Secretary for Water and Science on February 3.<\/li>\r\n<li><a href=https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/nomination\/119th-congress\/25\/30>Ned Mamula<\/a>, who was nominated to be Director of the <a href=https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/>United States Geological Survey<\/a> on February 11.<\/li>\r\n<li><a href=https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/nomination\/119th-congress\/25\/51>Kathleen Sgamma<\/a>, who was nominated to be Director of the <a href=https:\/\/www.blm.gov\/>Bureau of Land Management<\/a> on February 11.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nThe White House initially referred the nomination of Billy Kirkland, who is a citizen of the <a href=https:\/\/www.navajo-nsn.gov\/>Navajo Nation<\/a>, to the <a href=https:\/\/www.energy.senate.gov\/nominations>Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources<\/a>. The record has since been corrected to reflect that he will be considered by the <a href=https:\/\/www.indian.senate.gov>Senate Committee on Indian Affairs<\/a>, as has been the case since the <a href=https:\/\/presidentialtransition.org\/position_description\/assistant-secretary-of-indian-affairs-2\/>Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs position<\/a> was established in 1977.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nThe Senate Committee on Indian Affairs has yet to announce a <a href=https:\/\/www.indian.senate.gov\/library\/nominations\/>confirmation hearing<\/a> for Kirkland.  <a href=https:\/\/www.murkowski.senate.gov\/>Sen. Lisa Murkowski<\/a> (R-Alaska), the Republican chair of the legislative panel, was  expected to issue a statement about the nomination  but has not publicly commented.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nBurgum has not publicly commented on Kirkland&#8217;s   leadership position either. That would leave the <a href=https:\/\/www.bia.gov\/>Bureau of Indian Affairs<\/a>, the <a href=https:\/\/www.bie.edu\/>Bureau of Indian Education<\/a> and the <a href=https:\/\/www.doi.gov\/ost>Bureau of Trust Funds Administration<\/a> without Senate-confirmed leadership until May, June or possibly even later in the summer.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nThe confirmation hearing for MacGregor also includes <a href=https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/nomination\/119th-congress\/13\/4?s=1&#038;r=17>James Danly<\/a>, who has been nominated to serve as Deputy Secretary of Energy.
