[<a href=https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/93rd-congress\/senate-bill\/1017>S.1017<\/a>]\r\nOver the last 50 years, tribes have  asserted greater sovereignty  over programs and services that were previously managed by agencies within the <a href=https:\/\/www.doi.gov\/>Department of the Interior<\/a>  and the <a href=https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/>Department of Health and Human Services<\/a>.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n&#8220;This hearing will examine the successes and opportunities for tribal self-governance in economic development and healthcare as the Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act turns 50,&#8221; a <a href==\"https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/25\/HHRG-119-II00-20250404-SD001.pdf\">notice from the subcommittee<\/a> reads.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n The hearing takes  place on April 4  at the <a href=https:\/\/famok.org\/>First Americans Museum<\/a> in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The half-day event, titled &#8220;<a href=https:\/\/www.nixonfoundation.org\/2024\/10\/landmark-policy-conference-recognizes-president-nixons-transformative-policies-for-american-indians\/>Tribal Self Determination Revisited: President Nixon\u2019s Lasting Impact on American Indian Life<\/a>,&#8221; focused on the ways in which \r\n<a href=https:\/\/www.bia.gov\/regional-offices\/great-plains\/self-determination>Public Law 93-638<\/a> has affected the economic, social  and cultural well-being  of Indian Country.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\n&#8220;If you look at where we were and where we are, it&#8217;s been a successful journey, from the 1970s to  today,&#8221; <a href=https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/BillAnoatubby\/>Chickasaw Nation Governor Bill Anoatubby<\/a> said at the event.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\n&#8220;We have a  highly functioning tribal government,&#8221; said Anoatubby, who has held  executive leadership positions within his tribe more than four decades. &#8220;We have the revenues that we need in order to for us to function and we are delivering the services that we need to deliver.&#8221;\r\n<P><\/P>\r\n<a href=\"https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/25\/HHRG-119-II00-20250404-SD001.pdf\" class=\"pdfemb-viewer\" style=\"\" data-width=\"max\" data-height=\"max\" data-toolbar=\"both\" data-toolbar-fixed=\"on\">Hearing Notice: Examining 50 years of the Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act in Indian Country<\/a>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nThe subcommittee is led by <a href=\"https:\/\/hurd.house.gov\">Rep. Jeff Hurd<\/a> (R-Colorado). He is  a new member of the <a href=https:\/\/www.house.gov\/>U.S. House of Representatives<\/a> whose district includes the reservations of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.southernute-nsn.gov\/\">Southern Ute Tribe<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.utemountainutetribe.com\/\">Ute Mountain Ute Tribe<\/a> in Colorado.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n Since the start of the 119th Congress in January 2025, the subcommittee has held three hearings on legislation and issues affecting Indian Country, all of which took place in February.
