Entitled \u201cWOKIKSUYE\u201d, it commences at the Dahl Arts Center Cyclorama Gallery with &#8220;a gathering for those who would like to share memories or stories\u201d from the life of the artist, the city said in an open invitation to the reception.<p><\/p>\r\nWokiksuye is a translation from the Lakota language, meaning \u201ca remembrance.\u201d The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/DahlArtsCenter\/posts\/4418374581529388\">public reception is scheduled<\/a> from 5 p.m. &#8211; 7 p.m. The show will be in the Senator Stan Adelstein &#038; Lynda K. Clark Gallery of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedahl.org\">Dahl Arts Center<\/a>. The artwork will be on display through August  21, according to hosts.<p><\/p>\r\nMost of the artwork is from the collections of <a href=\"http:\/\/aktalakota.stjo.org\/site\/PageServer?pagename=alm_homepage\">Akta Lakota Museum and Cultural Center<\/a> in Chamberlain and from Cathy and Larry Piersol of Vermillion, where Penn lived, they said.\r\nAmong the pieces demonstrating the artist\u2019s versatility are \u2018Legend of the Four Brothers\u201d a 1986 watercolor on paper; \u201cFlute Player\u201d, 1989, scratchboard; \u201cPipe Carrier\u201d, a 1989 watercolor on paper; and the 1989 pastel on paper \u201cMadonna and Child.\u201d<p><\/p>\r\n<div class=\"fb-post\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/aktalakota\/posts\/2603125789794881\" data-width=\"552\" style=\"background-color: #fff; display: inline-block;\"><\/div>\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nSome of Penn\u2019s works are only on view at collections in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.; the Minneapolis Institute of Arts; and the Vincent Price Gallery in Chicago.\r\nSicangu Lakota and Omaha, Penn was born on May 3, 1946 in Omaha and passed on February 7, 1999. He attended high school at St. Francis Mission on the Rosebud Sioux Indian Reservation and received his Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the University of South Dakota in 1992. <p><\/p>\r\nPenn was a prot\u00e9g\u00e9 and work study assistant of former South Dakota Artist Laureate Oscar Howe (1915-1983), a Yanktonai Dakota. Known as Bobby and his Lakota name Wichapi Cik\u2019ala, or Little Star, he explored and mastered every style of art that he pursued.<p><\/p><div class=\"mt-1 mb-1\"><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-8411603009680747\" data-ad-slot=\"6394965691\"><\/ins><script>(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});<\/script><\/div><p><\/p>\r\n\u201cHe seemed to move effortlessly from large oil paintings to intimate watercolor pieces.
