The decision, which must still be approved by the board of education, marked a departure from the city\u2019s typical practice of naming high schools after directions.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nAnother high school in Lincoln currently under construction has been named Lincoln Northwest.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nLaravie spoke Tuesday before the board and sang a song named for Standing Bear.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<div class=\"streak streak-lg streak-photo\" style=\"background-image:url('https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/2017\/11\/10\/chiefstandingbear2.jpg')\">\r\n    <div class=\"flex-center white-text pattern-6\">\r\n         <ul class=list-unstyled>\r\n            <li><h1 class=\"h1-responsive wow fadeIn\"><i class=\"fa fa-quote-left\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i>\r\nThat hand is not the color of yours, but if I pierce it, I shall feel pain. If you pierce your hand, you also feel pain. The blood that will flow from mine will be the same color as yours. I am a man. The same God made us both.\r\n<i class=\"fa fa-quote-right\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><\/h1><\/li>\r\n            <li><h4 class=\"text-center font-italic wow fadeIn\" data-wow-delay=\"0.2s\">&#8212; Ponca Chief Standing Bear<\/h4><\/li>\r\n         <\/ul>\r\n    <\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nLarry Wright Jr., chairman of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.poncatribe-ne.org\/\">Ponca Tribe<\/a> of Nebraska, also spoke Tuesday. He said he was hopeful naming a high school after Standing Bear would help undo harmful stereotypes about Native people and the pain caused by inappropriate Native mascots.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cThis was a real opportunity if this name was chosen to lead the country and show how this can be done in a good way that\u2019s representative and respectful of Indigenous people in this state,\u201d he said.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nNaming a high school after Standing Bear would continue efforts to memorialize the chief. Those efforts have included the installation of a 9-foot tall sculpture in the <a href=https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/2019\/09\/23\/ponca-chief-standing-bear-makes-one-last.asp>U.S. Capitol\u2019s National Statuary Hall<\/a> in September 2019, which was a smaller version of a <a href=https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/2017\/11\/10\/an-indian-man-is-on-the-mall-statue-of-p.asp>statue placed in downtown Lincoln<\/a> in 2017.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nAnd recently, the U.S. House of Representative again considered <a href=https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/2021\/05\/25\/h-r-810-chief-standing-bear-national-historic-trail\/>legislation designating the Chief Standing Bear Trail<\/a> as a national historic trail. The chamber passed <a href=https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/117th-congress\/house-bill\/810>H.R.810<\/a> on May 12. \r\n<p><\/p><div class=\"mt-1 mb-1\"><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-8411603009680747\" data-ad-slot=\"6394965691\"><\/ins><script>(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});<\/script><\/div><p><\/p>\r\n <a href=https:\/\/fortenberry.house.gov\/>Rep. Jeff Fortenberry<\/a> (R-Nebraska), the bill\u2019s sponsor, spoke during the 2019 dedication of Standing Bear\u2019s statue in Washington, D.C.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cChief Standing Bear didn\u2019t seek to be a civil rights leader,\u201d he said. \u201cHe simply wanted to bury his dead son on their ancestral homeland. And in doing so, he called forth the essence of human dignity and he changed the course of history in that transcendent moment when he raised his hand and said, \u2018I am a man. God made us both.\u2019\u201d\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nThe U.S. Senate has yet to take up the measure.
