I mean like \u201cThe Nazi Menace\u201d,\u00a0or \u201cThe Last Mission over Tokyo.\u201d  <p><\/p>\r\nThese were the World War II years,\u00a0after all.<p><\/p>\r\nFor sure,\u00a0I was not reading \u201cLittle House on the Prairie\u201d during my formative years!<p><\/p>\r\nI really never got addicted\u00a0to reading novels because they are usually disappointingly about ex-wives and how to get happy in spite of your shortcomings. \u00a0Many, \u00a0these days,\u00a0are boring women\u2019s works about \u201cbecoming\u201d.<p><\/p>\r\nI will admit, though, that I am an addictive reader and I subscribe to everything!<p><\/p>\r\nBut,\u00a0lately I have\u00a0taken on a more critical view of this pastime of reading good books and I\u2019ve been thinking how reading engenders\u00a0passivity. If you really want to think of the consequences of an activity that you take more or less take for granted, the truth is that the consequence\u00a0of curling up with a good book is\u00a0doing nothing!<p><\/p>\r\n<div class=\"mt-1 mb-1\"><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\"\r\n     data-ad-layout=\"in-article\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-8411603009680747\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"6394965691\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n  <\/script><\/div><p><\/p>\r\nAs I became an adult I even learned to love reading REVIEWS of books. Even today,\u00a0I recommend that source. You don\u2019t have to actually read the books &#8212; you can just read reviews. These days,\u00a0during the lockdowns because of the pandemic I can imagine that people are doing much more reading than usual because STAYING HOME is getting a bit tedious,\u00a0and reading makes you feel that you are at least doing\u00a0something.<p><\/p>\r\nMaybe you like exposes as your reading fare. By Steve Benen, 2020. \r\n<\/figcaption>\r\n<\/div><\/div>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nThis brings me to a book that crossed my desk recently and it is called <a href=https:\/\/amzn.to\/33V0dLV><EM>The Impostors<\/em><\/a>,\u00a0subtitled &#8220;How Republicans Quit Governing and Seized American Politics.&#8221;\u00a0That sounds like an adventure,\u00a0doesn\u2019t it?\u00a0The title intrigued me because I began to realize that as an avid and dedicated reader of books,\u00a0I have learned to be very\u00a0passive. \u00a0The thing about this book is that it explains the current\u00a0political scene which most of us have been noticing is like doing nothing but\u00a0reading Trump\u2019s tweets.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nYou can hardly get your neighbors into a discussion about it all,\u00a0and the news outlets are not exactly \u201cthat\u2019s the way it is\u201d commentators like Walter Cronkite was so many years ago.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nIn fact,\u00a0you have to read 200 pages of\u00a0<em>Impostors<\/em> before you get to understanding the\u00a0passiveness\u00a0and do-thing-ness of the political parties who are\u00a0failing\u00a0to indict the breakdown of Republican Trump-ism,\u00a0and\u00a0their failure to tell us about it.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nEven Mitch McConnell\u00a0saying \u201cno\u201d to every Democratic thing\u00a0that comes across his desk is treated\u00a0as though he is an okay legislator. \u00a0He is not.
