<\/p>\r\nThe House Subcommittee on Indian and Insular Affairs<\/a> is holding its first hearing of the 119th Congress.\r\n

<\/p>\r\nFour bills are on the agenda for the hearing on Wednesday morning<\/a>. They follow:\r\n

<\/p>\r\n

\r\n• H.R.410<\/a>, the Alaska Native Vietnam Era Veterans Land Allotment Extension Act of 2025. The bill extends the Alaska Native Vietnam-Era Veterans Land Allotment Program<\/a> for another five years to ensure the Bureau of Land Management<\/a> can reach out to Alaska Native veterans who are entitled to land selections.\r\n

<\/p>\r\n • H.R.412<\/a>, to authorize the Bay Mills Indian Community of the State of Michigan to convey land and interests in land owned by the tribe. The bill ensures that the \r\nBay Mills Indian Community<\/a> can make decisions affecting its fee lands in Michigan without seeking approval from the Bureau of Indian Affairs<\/a> for every transaction. Similar bills have been enacted for other tribes in prior sessions of Congress.\r\n

<\/p>\r\n• H.R.504<\/a>, the Miccosukee Reserved Area Amendments Act. The bill adds an area known as Osceola Camp to the reservation of the Miccosukee Tribe<\/a>. The land is located within the Everglades National Park<\/a> in Florida.\r\n

<\/p>\r\n• H.R.741<\/a>, the Stronger Engagement for Indian Health Needs Act of 2025. The bill elevates the Director of the Indian Health Service<\/a> to the position of Assistant Secretary of Indian Health within the Department of Health and Human Services<\/a>.\r\n <\/div>\r\n

<\/p>\r\nThe subcommittee’s chair for 119th Congress is Rep. Jeff Hurd<\/a> (R-Colorado). He is a new member of the U.S. House of Representatives<\/a>, having won election in Colorado\u2019s 3rd congressional district in November 2024.\r\n

<\/p>\r\n\u201cI am honored to serve as Chairman of the Indian and Insular Affairs subcommittee, and to build upon the great work of past chairwoman Rep. Hageman,\u201d Hurd said in a January 9 news release, referring to his predecessor, Rep. Harriet Hageman<\/a> (R-Wyoming). \u201cThis chairmanship will give the people of the Third District, Colorado and the west a voice on issues that are pivotal to our country.\u201d\r\n
