Sans Souci told her uncle to be careful living on the streets. So instead of praying and practicing the rituals that would have helped her address her grief at the loss of her uncle, she was forced to let that pain fester and cause her heart problems, Sans Souci said.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cThose experiences that we have with our loved ones, and when they\u2019re hurt or killed that way, it does something to you, to your spirit, to your mind, to your body,\u201d she said.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nAnd Sans Souci has made it her mission to help address the spiritual needs of those who\u2019ve lost loved ones to murder or other suspicious causes.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nShe shared her story Wednesday night at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiancenterinc.org\/\">Lincoln Indian Center<\/a> before a dozen people as part of a Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-Spirit People prayer vigil. The event was held on the <a href=\"https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/2021\/05\/05\/no-more-stolen-sisters-safety-for-native-women-and-girls\/\">Missing and Murdered Native Women and Girls National Day of Action<\/a>.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nIn some tribal communities, American Indian women face murder rates more than 10 times the national average, according to a study released by the U.S. Department of Justice. No one has ever been charged in her death, though her family has long believed someone she knew murdered her.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nAnd Sans Souci talked about the death of <a href=\"https:\/\/indianz.com\/News\/2020\/07\/27\/that-was-the-last-time-i-heard-from-her.asp\">Lenice Blackbird<\/a>, who died last year after contracting <a href=\/covid19\/>COVID-19<\/a>. Her family has blamed Omaha tribal officials for failing to check on the 25-year-old woman while she was sick and refusing to look for her when her family reported her missing from the cabin where she had been forced to quarantine.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nHer family found her several days later a few hundred feet from the cabin, and her cause of death was later listed as undetermined.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nOn Tuesday, Blackbird\u2019s family held a memorial walk on the Omaha Reservation to celebrate her birthday.\r\n<p><\/p><div class=\"mt-1 mb-1\"><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-8411603009680747\" data-ad-slot=\"6394965691\"><\/ins><script>(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});<\/script><\/div><p><\/p>\r\nSans Souci said it was difficult to learn from the woman\u2019s family that tribal leaders had failed to pray with the family and address their spiritual needs following Blackbird\u2019s death.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cIt hurt because they should have been taking care of the spiritual part of helping this family but also taking care of the spirits of these women,\u201d she said. \u201cThey have no answers. It is hard.\u201d\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nLance McIntire was killed after stopping at a pawn shop. Omaha police ruled his killing as justified.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nOn Sunday, his family held a memorial service for him that included a feast and giveaway.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nMcIntire-Lone Dog said she brought her daughters to the Lincoln Indian Center in order to show them that their lives matter.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cI want them all to be aware of this, what happens to them, and that they need to respected and honored, not trampled down and disappeared,\u201d she said. \u201cI want them all to know that they are of value.
