Photo: Four Winds Casino<\/figcaption>\r\n<div class=\"h3-responsive font-weight-bold\">Pokagon Band finalizes historic gaming compact with Indiana<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"date\">Monday, May 3, 2021<\/div>\r\n<div class=\"source\">Indianz.Com<\/div>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nThe <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pokagonband-nsn.gov\/\">Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians<\/a> is finalizing a  Class III gaming compact with the state of Indiana, the latest in a series of history-making moves by the tribe.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nPokagon Chairman  Matthew Wesaw and Indiana Gov. Eric J. Holcomb (R) will host a ceremonial signing for the agreement on Tuesday. The event takes place in South Bend, where the tribe opened another branch of the   <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fourwindscasino.com\/southbend\/\">Four Winds Casino<\/a> a little over three years ago.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nThe gaming facility is located on a 166-acre site in the city. It is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indianz.com\/IndianGaming\/2016\/11\/23\/pokagon-band-secures-approval-to-restore.asp\">first parcel of land acquired in trust in the state of Indiana<\/a> in U.S. history.\r\n<P><\/p>\r\nThe tribe has since become a significant part of civic, cultural and economic life in South Bend, which is part of Pokagon territory. Photo: Pokagon Band\r\n<\/figcaption>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cThe Pokagon Band is very proud to be able to make our annual voluntary contributions to the City of South Bend and several non-profit organizations that play a vital role in serving the community,\u201d    Wesaw, who also serves as chief executive officer of the Pokagon Gaming Authority, said in January. \r\n<p><\/p>\r\n\u201cAlthough the challenges due to <a href=\/covid19\/>COVID-19<\/a> persist, we must continue to find ways to support individuals and families, especially those with the greatest need,\u201d said Wesaw. \u201cWe are fortunate to be in a position to continue to provide this level of support in the current environment.\u201d\r\n<P><\/p>\r\nThe Class III gaming compact requires revenues to be shared with the state. In exchange for a guarantee of regional exclusivity, the tribe will contribute 8 percent of the net win at Four Winds South Bend to Indiana.\r\n<p><\/p><div class=\"mt-1 mb-1\"><ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\" data-ad-layout=\"in-article\" data-ad-format=\"fluid\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-8411603009680747\" data-ad-slot=\"6394965691\"><\/ins><script>(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});<\/script><\/div><P><\/P>\r\nThe tribe concluded negotiations for the agreement in January. The Indiana Legislature subsequently <a href=\"http:\/\/iga.in.gov\/legislative\/2021\/bills\/house\/1055\">ratified the compact through a separate bill<\/a>, which was signed into law by Holcomb last Thursday. House Bill 1055\r\ncontains the text of the compact.\r\n<P><\/P>\r\nBefore the tribe can engage in Class III gaming at Four Winds, the <a href=https:\/\/www.bia.gov\/>Bureau of Indian Affairs<\/a> must either approve the compact or allow it to take effect. Once it the agreement is submitted to the BIA, the  Indian Gaming Regulatory Act provides a review period of 45 days.\r\n<p><\/p>\r\nClass III gaming is a category of gaming that includes slot machines, most card games, ball and dice games and related offerings.
