House committee markup on Save Oak Flat Act and Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium Land Transfer Act<\/div>\r\n

<\/p>\r\nThe House Committee on Natural Resources<\/a> is holding a markup<\/a> on two bills of interest in Indian Country.\r\n

<\/P>\r\nThe first is H.R.1884<\/a>, the Save Oak Flat Act. The bill permanently protects Oak Flat<\/a>, a sacred Apache site in Arizona, from being used for a massive copper mine. \r\n

<\/p>\r\nA hearing took place<\/a> on April 13. Leaders from the Inter Tribal Council of Arizona<\/a> and the National Congress of American Indians<\/a> testified in support of the legislation, which has broad backing in Indian Country, as well as from the San Carlos Apache Tribe<\/a> and the Apache Stronghold<\/a> group.\r\n
