President Donald Trump announced the name of Alaska\u2019s highest peak \u2014 and North America\u2019s tallest at over 20,000 feet \u2014 Denali, would be changed back to Mount McKinley<\/a>.<\/p>

Trump was sworn in as the 47th president on Monday, and made the announcement in his inaugural address<\/a>, also promising to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico.<\/p>

\u201cA short time from now, we are going to be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America,\u201d Trump said. \u201cAnd we will restore the name of a great president, William McKinley, to Mount McKinley, where it should be and where it belongs.\u201d<\/p>

William McKinley was the 25th president, serving from 1897 until his assassination in 1901. Trump has praised his tariff policies, known as the McKinley tariffs, which raised taxes on some imported goods.<\/p>

\u201cPresident McKinley made our country very rich through tariffs and through talent \u2014 he was a natural businessman \u2014 and gave Teddy Roosevelt the money for many of the great things he did, including the Panama Canal, which has foolishly been given to the country of Panama,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n

I strongly disagree with the President\u2019s decision on Denali. Our nation\u2019s tallest mountain, which has been called Denali for thousands of years, must continue to be known by the rightful name bestowed by Alaska\u2019s Koyukon Athabascans, who have stewarded the land since time\u2026<\/p>— Sen.
