THURSDAY, JANUARY 10, 2002

Tribal leaders held a meeting in Rapid City, South Dakota, on Wednesday in preparation to discuss a proposed reorganization of the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

Reform of the management of tribal and individual Indian trust assets is needed, said tribal leaders, but the proposal offered by Secretary of Interior without consultation is not adequate. To come up with an alternative, they are forming a task force of 24 tribal leaders, plus technical experts.

The panel was discussed at the meeting yesterday.

The fourth consultation session on the proposed Bureau of Indian Trust Assets Management will start at 9 a.m. today. Assistant Secretary Neal McCaleb is hosting the meeting.
