Checks to Great Lakes region delayed

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 20, 2001 General assistance and royalty payments to tribes and individual Indians in Minnesota and Wisconsin won't be sent out until after Christmas, the Bureau of Indian Affairs told Knight Ridder News on Wednesday. The delay is part of an Internet-related shutdown at the Department of Interior. Some 6,200 general assistance checks in the Great Plains region were manually processed and printed thanks to the help of the Lower Brule Sioux Tribe of South Dakota. Individual Indian Money (IIM) checks are still in limbo. The Interior is supposed to work with a federal court to ensure its computer systems are safe. Get the Story:
