Norton wants to cut Interior jobs

In order to cut costs, Secretary of Interior Gale Norton wants to cut as many as 3,500 jobs from her department and hand them over to a private contractor.

According to a memo sent to employees, Norton says she is identifying which jobs can be transferred over to private-sector companies within the next two years. All bureau agencies and offices are under consideration for cuts, she said.

With the proposal to strip the Bureau of Indian Affairs of its trust responsibilities and hand them over to another agency, a large but unspecified number of employees are facing an uncertain future. The BIA employs about 10,000, 90 percent of whom are American Indian or Alaska Native.
