More protests are expected on the Puerto Rican island of Vieques, when the Navy resumes bombing exercises today.

The island has been used for 60 years for military training. President Bush last week said he will end the bombings in May 2003, a move which angered some Republicans and military personnel.

Navy Secretary Gordon England on Friday defended the shutdown. He said he will ask Congress to cancel a referendum in Puerto Rico on the issue, since the bombing will end.
