Contempt trial important somewhere

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 29, 2001 It's not often that a Cabinet official is called to trial for contempt -- indeed it is extremely rare -- but the mainstream media isn't necessarily treating the matter seriously. The Washington Post relegates the story of Secretary of Interior Gale Norton's soon-to-be-revealed fate to the back pages of its front section. The paper in the past, however, has printed more prominently placed stories about the trust fund debacle. On the other hand, The Billings Gazette puts the story on its front page, pulling up one Associated Press account that includes tribal opposition to a proposal Norton has offered in response to the Individual Indian Money (IIM) lawsuit. Other AP versions don't include the quotes. The New York Times, which often sees fit to editorialize about the trust fund and other Interior actions, talks about the contempt action but only in a small brief in its national section. The paper devotes more attention to her presence at a reneweable energy gathering. Get the Story:
