FRIDAY, AUGUST 3, 2001 Besides the two Pequot tribes whose federal recognition saga is not quite yet over, a number of other groups in Connecticut are seeking acknowledgment by the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Of the petitioning parties, two are state-recognized. They are the Golden Hill Paugussett Tribe and the Schaghticoke Tribal Nation. The Golden Hill Tribe has been refused recognition three times, beginning with former Assistant Secretary Ada Deer. After a number of appeals, Deputy Assistant Secretary Michael Anderson in 1999 made a decision to have the tribe's final determination reconsidered. The Schaghticoke Tribe is on a court-ordered timetable to have its status finalized by June 2003. Get the Story:
