THURSDAY, AUGUST 2, 2001 Three Connecticut towns on Wednesday submitted evidence they say proves the Eastern Pequot Tribe and the Paucatuck Eastern Tribe do not deserve federal recognition. They also appealed to new Assistant Secretary Neal McCaleb to keep them in mind when he decides whether or not to issue a final determination on the two tribes. They said gaming money has unfairly influenced the federal recognition process. The tribes were granted preliminary recognition by former Assistant Secretary Kevin Gover last March. It is now up to McCaleb to decide whether he will accept one, both or none of the tribes by the end of the year. The comment period on the tribes closes today. Get the Story:
