MONDAY, APRIL 8, 2002

The Atomic Safety and Licensing Board will begin holding technical and public hearings on a proposed nuclear waste storage facility on the Skull Goshute Reservation in Utah.

The tribe has signed a lease with a consortium of private utilities to store up to 30,000 tons of highly radioactive waste on the reservation. Some tribal members oppose the plan as do most state politicians, officials and residents.

Two of the meetings will be public. The others are technical discussions between project proponents and opponents.
