THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 2001 Rep. Shelley Berkley (D-Nev.) is asking the District of Columbia Bar to investigate a law firm accused of surreptitiously obtaining documents from a government agency. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is currently investigating how its internal documents were obtained by Winston & Strawn, a Chicago-based firm. The firm apparently used the documents to help the Department of Energy prepare its license to store radiocative waste in Nevada at the Yucca Mountain site. If true, the documents would give the DOE an unfair advantage. The DOE is supposed to remain impartial about the actual use of the site. Winston & Strawn has a $16.5 million contract with DOE. A number of tribes oppose the Yucca project, fearing it would damage traditional lands. Nevada officials, lawmakers and a large segment of the public also oppose it. Get the Story:
