Secretary of Interior Gale Norton and Sen. Gordon Smith (R) met on Wednesday to discuss the water situation in the Klamath River basin on the Oregon-California border.

The basin has been a hotbed of activity lately due to protests by local farmers. To protect endangered and threatened fish and uphold trust responsibilities to area tribes, the farmers were denied water by the Interior.

Norton said her department is looking a long-term goals to ease the water crisis. The Associated Press does not report if any tribes attended yesterday's meeting.
