Protest held over Klamath water

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 22, 2001 A convoy of vehicles from Montana, Nevada and California arrived in Oregon on Tuesday to protest the continued denial of water to farmers in Klamath Falls. Their protest follows last week's announcement by Secretary of Interior Gale Norton that a temporary supply of water she appproved will end by tomorrow, August 23. In making her update, she said the farmers' water must be cut off to protect the government's trust responsibility to tribes in the Klamath Basin. The Bureau of Reclamation has denied the farmers water to protect endangered and threatened runs of fish. The suckerfish are considered sacred by the Klamath Tribe and the salmon are used by the Yurok Tribe. Get the Story:
