The Oregonian reports today that Secretary of Interior Gale Norton has asked the National Academy of Sciences to review a biological opinion which led her department to deny water to farmers in Oregon.

The details of the review are forthcoming, said a spokesperson.

The Bureau of Reclamation has denied water to about 1,400 farmers in order to protect endangered and threatened fish. The move led the farmers to break into a canal to restore the water.

Norton had already authorized the temporary release of extra water to the farmers, who are on the Oregon-California border.
