California tribes seek power plants

MARCH 20, 2001 With more than 1 million residences and businesses hit by rolling blackouts on Monday, California's tribes may soon help provide more power to demanding consumers. Calpine Corp. last June proposed to build a $275 million, 600-megawatt plant on the Torres-Martinez Band of Desert Cahuilla Reservation in southern California. The Cabazon Band of Mission Indians is seeking to build a 500- to 600-megawatt power plant on reservation land in the area as well. Get the Story:
