School benefactor wants 'Sioux' nickname

JANUARY 16, 2001 Ralph Engelstad, a casino owner and real estate developer who is donating a $85 million hockey arena to the University of North Dakota, says he will drop the project if the school drops its "Fighting Sioux" nickname. Engelstad wrote a letter to school President Charles Kupchella, informing him of his position and said he'd let the building detoriorate if the name was dropped. The state Board of Higher Education voted to keep the name the day after he sent the letter. Get the Story:
