NIGC orders Meskwaki Tribe to close casino

WEDNESDAY, MAY 14, 2003 The National Indian Gaming Commission on Tuesday ordered the Meskwaki Tribe to close its casino due to an ongoing leadership dispute. The tribe's elected leaders were overtaken by an appointed council. But the NIGC and the Bureau of Indian Affairs continue to recognize the elected council. The casino has continued to operate during the dispute. An attorney for the elected council says the NIGC can call in federal marshals to shut it down. Get the Story:
