Most Indian-sponsored bills in Mont. killed

FRIDAY, MAY 2, 2003 The overwhelming majority, 81 percent, of bills sponsored by Indian lawmakers in Montana were killed this past legislative session, The Helena Independent Record reports. Indian lawmakers complained that their bills were voted down simply because of their subject. Overall, about half of 225 pieces of legislation dealing with Indian issues passed, the paper said. One of the most significant that did pass was a bill formalizing the state-tribal relationship. There are seven Indian lawmakers currently serving in the Legislature, a record number. Get the Story:
