Another year another Columbus Day

About 600 police officers were on duty Saturday to keep the peace in Denver, Colorado, where two opposing Columbus Day marches were held.

A reported 1,000 American Indians and supporters turned out for the Four Directions/All Nations March. The morning march was a call for justice for indigenous people.

Hundreds of protesters greeted an afternoon march by Italian-Americans who are proud of Christopher Columbus. The clash was largely uneventful. Seven people were arrested peacefully.

Quote of the day goes to Rep. Tom Tancredo, a Colorado Republican who wants to deport a 17-year-old Mexican honor student and the student's family. "I came not because I'm Italian, but because you can poke a hole in all this crap that we can't be proud of where we came from," he said, according to the Associated Press.
