Alaska mine target of $60 million suit

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 2002 Making good on an earlier threat, the residents of an Eskimo village in Alaska sued the operators of the world's largest zinc mine. Kivalina village alleges the Red Dog mine has polluted waters and food sources in violation of the Clean Water Act. The lawsuit cites $60 million in damages. NANA Regional Corporation owns the mine but it is operated by Teck Cominco Alaska. NANA believes the mine is being operated safely. Get the Story:
