Researchers battle in court over peyote research
Tuesday, September 16, 2003

Two anthropologists are accusing each other of libel, slander and defamation in a dispute over peyote research.

Dr. Jay Courtney Fikes, a professor of anthropology at Yeditepe University in Istanbul, has long accused Dr. Peter T. Furst, a former chairman of the anthropology department at the State University of New York at Albany, of falsifying research involving Carlos Casteneda, an author whose books on peyote sparked interest in the hallucinogen. The feud dates to the 1980s.

The battle escalated when Fikes sued Furst in New Mexico. Fikes alleges that Furst cost him a job researching Huichol Indians in Mexico.
