Civil rights groups not happy with police report

A coalition of civil-rights groups says the Rhode Island state police report on the July 14 raid of the Narragansett Tribe's smoke shop failed to answer key questions.

The report, made public last week, concluded that state troopers "acted appropriately." But Gov. Donald Carcieri acknowledged it doesn't explain why the troopers didn't withdraw if they encountered resistance. Carcieri says he made that explicit order.

Carcieri appointed an independent panel, which includes National Congress of American Indians executive director Jackie Johnson, to investigate the raid.

Throughout history, people in government and law enforcement have always hidden behind the the old stand by, "we were just following orders!" It was the same lame excuse that Nazi leaders used to explain away their responsiblilty at Nuremburg in 1946 and it seems that history has taught us nothing some 60 years later. Everyday I hear people say, we need more law and order! Exactly what Germans said in the 1920's and 30's. They got all the law and order they could handle, and a little bit more. It is up to us as a people and as a society to instill in our children and in ourselves. Be responsible, and be responsible for you own actions. We must hold our elected officials and law enforcement responsible for actions committed during the course of doing ones "duty!" We were the ones who elected these meglomanics to office, so aren't we all in some small way responsible for what is going on?
