Letter: 'Redskins' honors Native people
WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 9, 2002 "The Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments is to decide today whether to call on Washington's football team to put an end to the use of the "Redskins" nickname because of the perceived negatives associated with the name. But instead of erasing the reference to American Indian heritage, a better solution might be to print an explanation of the term on each football program: The name was chosen out of respect for American Indian culture and tradition. In fact, the team's coach at the time of the naming, Lone Star Dietz, was part Sioux. . ." Get the Story:
