Group to get Columbus Day permit

TUESDAY, JULY 10, 2001

After a month of camping out in front of a city office, an Italian group today will get the sole permit to stage a parade on Columbus Day in Denver, Colorado.

Sons of Italy / New Generation started a 24-hour vigil a month ago because city officials said only one parade permit would be issued on October 8. But that doesn't mean there won't be a counter Columbus Day protest, as a group called End the Politics of Cruelty has a different permit to hold events during same time frame.

Last year, American Indian activists staged a protest in which 140 were arrested. The cases were subsequently dropped against them.
