Thorpe to be on Wheaties box

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 21, 2001

The achievements of legendary Sac and Fox athlete and Olympic champion Jim Thorpe will be honored with his placement on a box of cereal.

Wheaties, also known as the Breakfast of Champions, will feature Thorpe and greatest athlete in the world on its cereal box. Known for winning two gold medals at the 1912 Olympics, Thorpe was also a baseball and football star.

The placement of Thorpe on the box came after former Miss Indian USA Anna McKibben, a member of the Quapaw Tribe of Oklahoma, began a letter-writing campaign to General Mills, the makers of Wheaties. Thousands of letters of support were received, said the company.

Participating in Thursday's announcement, which the company said was timed with Native American Heritage Month, was Grace Thorpe, the 80-year-old daughter of Thorpe who supported McKibben's campaign. She said her father ate Wheaties.
