Okla. tribes push for N.Y. casinos
MONDAY, APRIL 15, 2002
The Seneca-Cayuga Tribe of Oklahoma has told New York Gov. George Pataki of that it wants two casinos in his state.
The tribe is willing to forego its share of a $250 million land claim award for the casinos. But a spokesperson for Pataki says there probably won't be a deal.
Tell that to officials in Ulster County, who approved a gaming agreement with another Oklahoma tribe. The Modoc Tribe wants a casino in the Catskills.
As for the Seneca Nation of New York, the tribal council approved a compact with the state. The agreement calls for up to three casinos, two of which will be off-reservation.
A voter referendum has been scheduled for May 15. A group called Senecas Against Casinos says the compact will dilute tribal sovereignty.
