Oneida Nation disputes tax lawsuit

FEBRUARY 1, 2001

Lawyers for the Oneida Nation of New York on Wednesday disputed a lawsuit brought against it by the city of Sherill and said the land they own is part of their reservation and not subject to local taxes.

The city began foreclosure on nearly a dozen properties owned by the tribe. The city says the tribe owes them $12,000 in property taxes but the tribe won't pay the bill, citing ownership of the land under the 1838 Treaty of Buffalo Creek.
