Bush brief expands gun rights

WEDNESDAY, MAY 8, 2002

The Department of Justice submitted two legal briefs to the Supreme Court asserting the rights of U.S. citizens to bear arms under the Constitution.

The filings represent the first time the argument has been advanced by the federal government and are a reversal of prior policy which tied the right to a "well regulated militia." Solicitor General Ted Olson authored the briefs but they closely reflect personal views Attorney General John Ashcroft has expressed recently.

The briefs were submitted in cases the Court has been asked to review.
