Mohawk Tribe changing name

FRIDAY, MARCH 8, 2002

The St. Regis Mohawk Tribe is no more. Say hello to the Akwesasne Mohawk Nation.

The tribe's name is being changed officially as a result of an effort by the tribe's three traditional chiefs. The chiefs were recognized as the legitimate government of the tribe by a federal court.
