Native Hawaiian trust challenged

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 6, 2002

A group of Hawaii residents is seeking to have a $337 million Native Hawaiian trust fund be turned over to the state.

The group has filed suit in federal court, saying that a home program is race-based and unconstitutional. The state administers the trust and the 200,000-acre Hawaiian Homes program, which would have to be opened up to non-Native Hawaiians if a judge strikes it down.
