Pequot Tribe seeks peace
WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 27, 2002 The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation withdrew its land-into-trust application to try and smooth over relations with three Connecticut towns, a tribal council member said. But leaders of the towns say the issue is not over and want finality. Although Ledyard, North Stonington and Preston lost that part of their case, they continue to push to limit all trust land petitions. Regarding the subject, a local paper says there are plenty of reasons why the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation of Connecticut withdrew its land-into-trust application for 165 acres of land. But whatever the explanation, it's time for the tribe and three towns to develop a better relationship, The New London Day writes in an editorial. The paper says "clear and honest communication will promote a greater degree of trust." The paper adds that casinos are here to stay and the sides must work together. Get the Story:
