Enron subject of criminal investigation

THURSDAY, JANUARY 10, 2002

The Department of Justice has launched a criminal probe into the collapse of the energy company Enron, officials confirmed yesterday.

A special task force involving U.S. Attorneys throughout the nation will be formed. Part of the probe will focus on whether the company defrauded investors, which include the Southern Ute Tribe of Colorado.

Once the darling of the financial market, Enron filed for bankruptcy in New York court last month. Some investors, including the tribe, want the case moved to Houston, Texas, the company's homebase.

In addition to numerous lawsuits, The company's collapse is the subject of Congressional hearings.
