Peace said soon for Chiapas

FEBRUARY 8, 2001

Mexico's President Vicente Fox on Wednesday said a new peace agreement will be reached with leaders of an Indian-rights movement in the southern state of Chiapas.

The Zapatista rebels say they won't meet with Fox until all of their demands are completely fulfilled, however. Four out of seven military bases have been closed, some political prisoners have been released, and an Indian-rights bill has been submitted to Congress but not yet been passed.
