Mexican rebels want all demands met

JANUARY 31, 2001

Leaders of Mexico's Indian rights movement on Tuesday said they want all of their demands met by the Mexican government before they resume peace talks.

President Vicente Fox has responded to some of their demands, including sending an Indian rights bill to Congress, releasing some political prisoners, and closing some Army bases in the southern state of Chiapas. The Zapatista group, however, says all seven bases must close and all prisoners must be released before talks can resume.
