In The Hoop
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 6, 2002

Welcome to In The Hoop, Indianz.Com's occasional column about assorted Indian issues.

In The Hoop: The Scorecard
Is it Friday already? That means it's time for the weekly list of the movers and shakers in Indian Country and beyond.

The Winners
Scientists - So you got your wish to study Kennewick Man for the good of all mankind. But somehow we doubt you'll share the results of your research beyond your insular group.

Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell - You may be a fashion victim but at least you made the list! We can't wait to see what you will wear to the NMAI pow-wow.

Phil Hogen - Surprise, surprise. The Bush administration recycled an appointee. At least they didn't go too far back to find you.

Peabody Coal - Not only are you not using every drop of Hopi and Navajo water in sight, you also aren't trying to rip off their coal. A true model of corporate excellence.

The Losers
Kennewick Man - It looks like you will never rest until every bone of yours is picked apart. Sadly, this is what makes you really Indian.

Department of Justice - Is there nothing better to do than probe alleged leaks? How about investigate your own shiftless attorneys!

The Wall Street Journal - Yet another uninformed opinion about Indians. You're starting to look like your friends up in Connecticut.

NAMMYS - We're all for honoring Native artists, we just wish they were artists who didn't find out they were Native yesterday.

In The Middle
Indian Kids - Will you beat the bad rap you have on drugs, tobacco and violence? Somehow we don't think an ad campaign is enough.

Oklahoma Tribes - Is this Wayne Pettigrew for real? Who can say for sure but you better watch out! He might come after your trust land next.

Rebekah Revels - Miss America pageant if only to see what your talent is. We hope it has something to do with filing lawsuits.

Forests - Run and hide, Auntie Gale has come to save you from the big bad environmentalists. This sort of sounds like when she blamed tribes for trust fund mismanagement.
